QUELLPLATZ, BAD RADKERSBURG
Thermal Spring Square
client: Stadtgemeinde Bad Radkersburg
competition: 1. Place
completion: 2020
area: 4.500 m2
The square is situated at the entrance of the building where the thermal springs, Bad Radkersburg is very much know for as a health resort, reach the earth’s surface. Already the smell coming towards you gives you an idea of these sulfur springs, which occur mainly in active or in former volcanic areas.
Therefore, the design of the space is heavily influenced by volcanic land. Different stones like Klöcher Basalt from the surrounding region, are placed in various forms and sizes to reflect that specific landscape. Small, artificial springs bubble up from a water basin. Seating stones invite young and old not only to linger but also to play and climb around. Red-leaved Sedum or Blutgrass are incorporated into the stone surface and represent the essence of lava. That way, both elements – water and fire – which are so typical of the volcanic land, are represented in the square. Other shrubs, bushes and woodlands complete the redesign.
