BURGGARTEN, GRAZ

client: Steiermärkische Landesregierung
competition: 1. place
scope Monsberger: landscape design
project lead: LIG (Landesimmobiliengesellschaft Steiermark)
start of planning process: 2003

completion: 2006
area: 18 000 m²

The landscape design of the 16th century Burggarten should be simple, minimal and clearly structured. Various coniferous forests were removed to open the park and create a generous, free space among the orangery and the Burg. In the center, a simple, straight water pond is located to serve as connecting element between those two historic buildings.
Within this transformation, the orangery was also renovated to be used as an event location. A new, spacious frontcourt acts as a transition area between the inside and the outside.
The local gardening and the old glasshouse were also revaluated.
